Artists Statement
Hello, my name is Henry R. Stull... or that guy who wrote the annoyingly long artist statement, whichever you prefer, regardless I am an artist. I've worked in many media such as graphite, ink, oils, and watercolor but I'd tell you my favorite is when they come together. I was born in Latrobe PA and was homeschooled along with my five siblings, and whenever I was bored, I would usually draw things like hundred-eyed monsters and stick families you know the usual little boy stuff. Now, I believe that every artist has a moment when the desire to create really takes over and what sparks it could be anything, for me it was jealousy. I was very jealous of my sister who had drawn a little girl in the rain and was getting a lot of praise for it, and from then on I had the itch to create so I too could receive compliments, but over time it became something more than that. I began to love what I did just for the sake of doing it, I got inspired by the things I saw and thought, "wow I want to do that" but not out of jealousy, but because I wanted to get better. I like to think that this was Gods way of turning something ugly into something beautiful as he does. I've gone on to find teachers and mentors and along the way, I found Jerry Scorpion who is a very kind soul. And that is what I've done, now let me tell you a bit of what I want to do. I make this art to tell stories and to inspire, I make it because I myself am inspired by stories of danger and peril, spun by people such as J R. R. Tolkien or gentle and cozy stories, such as Whinny the Pooh Now at this point, you may think to yourself this guy just sounds like wants to work in illustration or animation… well yes and no. Telling stories is not just important to me but to all of humanity. For thousands of years people have used stories to teach, to be understood, and to get attention, think about not just books and TV, but plays, advertisement, analogies, when your teacher said "johnny had 5 apples", the bible, and music. I think to tell stories, is to scream out saying. "Hey, I'm human, I'm here, and I can feel what you feel!" And that is why I strive to tell stories, and to inspire with my art. And if my pictures don't make you feel the same way you did when Luke Skywalker used the force for the first time then so be it, that's a-okay, but if the lines or the stokes or even the colors are pleasing for you to look at then I have done my job well.
